The critical function of IAU Colloquium No. 35 used to be to debate these facets of the options of the compilation, overview, and distribution of information which are universal to astrometry, photometry and spectrometry of stars and stellar platforms. within the assertion of the Colloquium, it used to be instructed that there will be precise emphasis at the thoughts of quality controls, and at the criteria for the presentation of numerical info in either published and com puter-readable shape. because the assembly stepped forward it turned transparent that the shortcoming of a regular, unambiguous procedure for the identifi cation of stellar gadgets was once a resource of a lot confusion and inefficiency within the use of present information documents. This and different such issues have been the topic of additional discussions by way of fee five on the basic meeting of the foreign Astronomical Union (IAU), which used to be held at Grenoble through the following fortnight, 24 August - 2 September 1976. The thought for the Colloquium used to be ready via J. Jung, who used to be then Director of the Centre des Donnees Stellaires at Stras bourg, and G. A. Wilkins, Chairman of the IAU operating crew on Numerical info, and used to be accredited by means of the IAU government Committee at the suggestion of the President of fee five, with the aid of Commissions 25, 29 and forty five. The medical setting up Committee consisted of W. Fricke, B. Hauck, C. Jaschek, J. Jung, B. Kukarkin, P. Lacroute, A. Underhill and G. A. Wilkins (Chair man). The neighborhood establishing Committee consisted of A.

If different values are known for the same quantity of a star, we should not use the mean of all determinations. Normally, the catalogue compiler who has to restrict himself to one value only, will assign priorities to certain series of observations. But, usually, he does not consider himself an expert on such observations. As he can draw nearly no support from literature, he needs private advice from colleagues. The work of the Data Centers is of invaluably high benefit for the compilation of a catalogue of nearby stars.

Firstly, it would not be practicable to use only radians and seconds for the measures of angles and time, and so the sexagesimal units are recognised alternatives. Secondly, the "natural" units for use in studying the dynamics of ~s THE USE OF SI UNITS IN ASTRONOMY 45 the solar system are the mean distance of the Earth from the Sun, the mass of the Sun, and the day. Even today, the mass of the Sun is known in kilograms with less precision than are the masses of the planets in units of the Sun's mass.

The first is a sign which separates southern OM stars from the northern ones. For the rest of the codes, it is always positive. The general meaning of a code is contained in the second digit which runs from 0 to 9. This is the first key to decode a coded number into the two parts contained in the 8 remaining digits: a) the second key which gives the reference to a catalogue or a published list, b) the number of the star in the quoted reference. The schematic definitions of the coded numbering system are given in the appendix.
