By A. Franklin

In this choice of essays Allan Franklin defends the view that technology presents us with wisdom concerning the global that is in accordance with experimental facts and on reasoned and important dialogue. briefly, he argues that technology is a cheap company.
He starts off with unique reports of 4 episodes from the heritage of contemporary physics: (1) the early makes an attempt to become aware of gravity waves, (2) how the physics group made up our minds proposed new uncomplicated particle, 17-keV neutrino, didn't exist, (3) a series of experiments on okay meson decay, and (4) the origins of the 5th strength speculation, a proposed amendment of Newton's legislation of common Gravitation.
The case reviews are then used to envision matters similar to how discord among experimental effects is resolved, calibration of an experimental gear and its valid use in validating an experimental outcome, and the way experimental effects offer moderate grounds for trust in either the reality of actual theories and within the life of the entities considering these theories.
This ebook is a problem to the critics of technological know-how, either postmodern and constructivist, to supply convincing substitute motives of the episodes and concerns mentioned. it may be of curiosity to philosophers, historians, and sociologists of technology, and to scientists themselves.

An excess of events was indeed found at the KOLmass and at zero angle to the beam. In order to demonstrate that the apparatus was functioning properly and that it could detect such decays, it was checked by looking at the known phenomenon of the regeneration ofKos mesons, followed by their decay into two pions. If it was operating properly the distributions in mass and angle in the case of both the KOs decays and the proposed K\ decays should have been identical. They were. (For details of this experiment see Franklin (1986, Chapters 3, 6, 7).

I think it is very important to take the point of view that the histogram itself is the final judge of what the sensitivity is (Weber, pp. 293-4). Weber did not, however, specify his method of data selection for his histogram. In particular, he did not state that all of the results presented in a particular histogram had the same threshold. Interestingly, Weber cited evidence provided by Kafka as supporting a positive gravity wave result. Kafka did not agree. 6 Davs Belween March 7,1974 and March 27,1974 Thresholds: 5; " 20 - - - - - - • z.

Results from an experiment which used a somewhat different apparatus. In this case the detector had been implanted with tritium at a different energy, and with a much lower concentration (about 1/40 that of the original detector). The results are shown in Fig. 8. 1 keV neutrino, with a mixing probability between 2 and 3%. 14 Simpson also discussed the question, raised by Haxton and by Eman and Tadic, of the adequacy of the exchange and screening corrections used in his theoretical model. He remarked that different corrections did produce changes in the (}-spectrum and in LiK/K, but found that they reduced the size of the kink by approximately 20%.
