Under the huge heading of blood oxygenation there is particular parts of analysis, akin to the kinetics of the oxygen hemoglobin response, diffusion of gases throughout the purple cellphone, blood renovation, blood chemistry, oxygen electrode layout and the layout and assessment of man-made blood oxygenators. ~lood oxygenation is of curiosity to many disciplines together with physicians, chemists, physicists, biologists, physiologists and engineers. The foreign Symposium on Blood Oxygenation used to be or ganized so as to compile the folks operating within the quite a few components of blood oxygenation. This multidiscipline meet ing used to be held on the college of Cincinnati on December 1, 2 and three of 1969. It used to be together backed by means of the U. S. military Medi cal study and improvement Command and the college of Cin cinnati. members got here from Australia, England, Israel, Italy, Japan and the USA. there have been 122 people registered for the Symposium. From the character of the dialogue in the course of the assembly, it appeared obvious that the individuals have been making the most of the contacts with colleagues in different disciplines. the outcome used to be an important contribution to the current fund of information of blood oxygenation and an enhancement of the long run work.

Apart from the measurement in a Hb solution, whenthe' oxygenation of Hb is measured in a red cell suspension, the reaction rate is markedly suppressed by diffusion into and out of the red cell. According to Mochizuki (1966) it becomes almost constant in a So range of o to 5CJ{o, regardless of the So , though in an initial ~ransition stage of the reaction, the rat~ usually decreased exponentially. In a range higher than 5CJ{o, however, the rate decreased gradually as the S02 increased. 'ate 26 M.

The plotted point at Reynolds number 0 was obtained previously by Koyama. and Mochizuki (1967) by using a stopped flow method combined with a sputtered Pt electrode elaborated by Saito (1967). The points in Fig. 3 show that the value increased with the flow velocity linearly at a low range of the velocity, but at a higher range the rate of the increment gradually decreased. 32 M. MOC HIZ UKI Table 2 Fc va+ues at the steady reaction stage obtained at three different Reynolds numbers on five normal human subjects.

Discussion Through both the preceding and the present studies it was clarified that the oxygenation velocity was increased significantly with the flow velocity. In addition, a systematic difference was observed between the two values measured by the polarographic and the photometric methods. The former finding may certainly be explained as an increment of diffusibility through the boundary layer around the red cell. But the difference between the Fc values measured by the above two methods seems difficult to be explained by the same reason.
