Figure 5 shows the saddle and equipment as used by field-grade officers. The saddle shown in Figure 6 is similar to the modern English show saddle with which we are familiar today. It was the standard issue saddle for Light Dragoons near the end of the War of 1812. Equipped with the usual pad for carrying the valisefor the cantle was low compared with the cantle on the saddle in Figure 4, which held the valise clear of the horse's backthis saddle was used in the field with only a folded blanket as a pad under it, but it was equipped with a shabrack for parade and ceremony, as shown in Figures 6 and 7.
