By G. J. Heij, T. Schneider

This ebook comprises the consequences and conclusions of in depth learn at the explanations and results of acidification of forests/forest soils and heathland within the Netherlands. In 1985 the Dutch precedence Programme on Acidification used to be began with the intention to supply a extra concrete shape to the expanding curiosity of policy-makers within the results of pollution on ecosystems particularly. within the final 3 years, the study has concerned about acquiring a extra exact estimate of the emission of ammonia at the deposition of SOx, NOy and NHx, and likewise on quantifying results on wooded area and heathland ecosystems. This quantification of results integrated experimental paintings version analyses, and derivation of serious a lot and degrees for wooded area and heathland ecosystems. moreover, situation analyses have been made with the Dutch Acidification platforms version (DAS) with a purpose to review the effectiveness of coverage measures. The examine itself, which shaped the root for this ebook, has been defined within the stories on person tasks. A precis of the medical effects and conclusions is given in thematic stories (added as annex).

Therefore, in 1989 a project (191) was started (in fact a small programme in itself) aimed at the determinationof deposition fluxes onto forest stands and heathland; exposition-effect research as part of a larger effort (assimilation chambers, open top chambers - OTC's -,field fumigation, field experiments, monitoring, modelling). A limited amount of research in OTC's has been judged valuable especially when combinations of stresses were investigated (air pollution, frost, water stress, pests).

The investigationof effects on forest soils was limited to acid sandy soils, on which 80 to 90% of the Dutch forests are to be found. These soils are susceptible to acidification. The forest/soil combinations investigated comprise almost 65% of the total Dutch forest area. e. an increase in the pH value and a reduction in A1 and NO3 concentrations and the AVCa and NH4/K ratios. The NO3 concentration and the NH4/K ratio, however, show a clear delay between reduced deposition and subsequent concentration reduction in the soil.

1 for those categories for which measurements were made in the framework of the acidification research. 1 both the measured as well as estimated emission factors for housing are listed. The measured factors are generally lower than those calculated by the Werkgroep, except for pig stables (partly slatted floor). The calculated emission factors are based on - 42 - assumptions regarding the evaporation rates of NH3 from the manure under different conditions. The comparison with the measurements from the experiments clearly demonstrate that the uncertainty in the calculated emission factors is very large.
