They can occur on any tree, anywhere, but are commonly found on elm, walnut, cherry, redwood, oak, and (again) our old friend and free-spirited maple. On the basis of artifacts, kings and queens of bygone days seem to have been particularly fond of burlwood items. 16 Quilted figure, like quilts themselves, comes in many patterns. The cells that function as vertical pipelines for transporting water are arranged end-to-end and side-to-side. They’re long narrow cells—tracheids, or vessels—that, depending on the tree, can range from microscopic to those that can be seen by the naked eye. This network of cells not only strengthens the tree but does two other very important things. Some of these cells, constituting the xylem, carry water from the roots to the leaves and other parts of the tree. Other cells, constituting the phloem, carry sap, or food, that the leaves have created back to the rest of the tree.

If you look at a globe that’s been color-coded according to tree types and zones, it looks like a swirly marble. Yet, on closer examination you can see some general patterns in terms of trees and the woods they create. There are rain forest trees—mostly hardwoods, like ipe and mahogany—that grow continuously and are so “ever green” that few produce nice consistent growth rings like those in areas where seasons and temperatures fluctuate more. Some tropical trees in ideal conditions can grow up to 15 feet in a single year.
