First of all, practice wasn’t talked about much in polite circles – like American Anthropological Association (AAA) meetings. Practitioner networks were small and few people knew about them. Like many of my peers, I was convinced that practice was a distant second choice for those who somehow didn’t make it in academia. When I was denied tenure, I thought I would have to forget about anthropology and get myself a “real” job. I am pleased to report that it didn’t turn out that way. After a few missteps, I found my feet as an anthropologist in the private sector when I began to do program evaluations in public health.
